Haydn composed 104 Symphonies, 20 concertos, 68 string quartets, 29 keyboard trios, 126 baryton trios, 47 keyboard sonatas,15 operas, 12 masses, and numerous other mixed ensemble, keyboard, and vocal works. Haydn was a skillful craftsman and business man, as he knew how to “sell his craft” and cater to large audiences of people through very different mediums- both instrumental and vocal works. Not only was his music glorious, but he was also said to represent the Enlightenment ideas of good character, piety, and kindness. Other classical composers that influence Haydn include Giovanni Battista Sammartini (an early practitioner of the symphony, Johann Stamitz (the first to compose symphonies in 4 movements, and a famous conductor of the Mannheim Orchestra), and many of Bach’s sons (he had 20!).Īs Haydn’s fame increased, he began to be regarded as the greatest composer alive. They were both regarded as successful because of their prolific amount of compositions and their ability to impact large, diverse audiences of people. Each were admired and influenced by the music of each other, although they had many of their own “flavors”. Haydn and Mozart are best known as the remarkable composers of the 18th century. When we moved out of this position in Hungary, he began to be influenced by many of his contemporaries. The end of his career primary took place in Vienna, where he died. ” – Franz Joseph HaydnĪfter his contract was over, he moved to London where he priemered many of his symphonies and gained much fame. “My prince was pleased with all of my work, I received applause, and as a conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what strengthened and what weakened an effect and thus improve, substitute, make cuts, and take risks I was isolated from the world no one in my vicinity could make me lose confidence in myself or bother me, and so I had to become original. A famous quote from Haydn himself is as follows: His compositional uniqueness is widely regarded as a result of his isolation. Because of this, Haydn was forced to be original and creative. In this job, he was expected to write any music that the Prince demanded and to conduct and train other musicians.Īs Haydn was isolated in this job and in this palace foe 30 years, he was not exposed to the rest of the world and the current development of music. It was abnormal for a musician to stay in one position of this long, but Haydn did. He worked loyally for this family for 30 years, a very large portion of his musical career. After the age of 6, he never lived with his parents again.įast forward a few years and Haydn was offered his first job for the royal Esterhazi family in Hungary (pictures of their palace are shown below). They accepted a proposal from a close relative living in a nearby town that served as a choirmaster and a school teacher, and Haydn set off to live with him. At the age of 6, Haydn’s parents noticed that he had an abnormal musical talent, and realized that they could not provide him with any opportunities due to their lack of money and opportunities in their town. Haydn’s childhood was considerably musical because his family would frequently gather with the neighbors to sing and enjoy this folk music. Neither of them could read music, but they had a great appreciation for folk music of the time. His father worked as a wheelwright and his mother a cook. Many view Haydn’s life as a “rags to riches” story. Haydn, a native of Austria was born into a family of very low status. He is one of the most influential composers of the classical period, as his contributions transformed the world of instrumental music.
